Local Angolan currency
Angola is still very much a cash-dependent economy with cash still exclusively used for most transactions within the country. The local currency, the Angolan Kwanza, is the most widely used currency and the use of credit cards is not widespread, largely due to a lack in card machine facilities throughout the country. It’s advisable that travellers always have the necessary cash on hand when attempting to make a purchase in Angola.
Travellers are also advised to consult with their banks in their respective home countries to inform them of possible transactions when they visit Angola. In addition, travellers’ cheques, amex, pounds and euros are generally also not accepted (euros and pounds can be exchanged at an exchange office). US dollar bills are, however, frequently used for payments.
